Look out for the information booth of the Orchestra and Band during Orientation Week and sign up there. Or simply turn up at the Orchestra’s first rehearsal for the Session (whether in March or July). Orchestra rehearsals are held every Tuesday during the teaching weeks of Session, from 6.30 to 9 pm, in the Clancy Auditorium on campus (see grid point C24 on this map). Occasionally rehearsals are held elsewhere on campus. Places in the woodwind, brass and percussion sections are competitive. If you are a woodwind, brass or percussion player, bring a short audition piece with you to the first rehearsal of the Session. Auditions may be held at the time of the first rehearsal, or in the second week. Bear in mind that existing players in these sections of the Orchestra will also be auditioning on the same occasion. Do not be downcast if you fail to gain a place: consider joining the Wind Band. Places in the strings are non-competitive. Violin players will be asked about their level of competence on their instrument, and may be invited to play a short prepared piece they have brought along to the first rehearsal, so that their allocation to a section desk may be determined. How good do you have to be at your instrument to play in the Orchestra? For string players, AMEB Fifth Grade and upwards would be desirable. For players in other sections it will depend on who else is auditioning. The standard is likely to be Seventh Grade and upwards. |
