UNSWO is:

  • a campus orchestra drawing its members from students and staff in most faculties. Winds, brass and percussion are auditioned each year in week 1 of Session 1. String players are not auditioned, but are asked questions about training and experience. (N.B. The Concert Band does not audition wind players.)
  • a full strength symphony orchestra (we were 107 when we did "The Planets". We're currently about 70 strong).
  • looking for more violas and cellos (we are currently 14, 10, 5, 4, 4). We'd also like to hear from experienced percussionists and a harpist.

How to join? All potential string players should come to a rehearsal and speak with the concert master. Wind, brass and percussion players should also audition on the first Tuesday each year.

Colin Piper is:

  • a seriously good conductor who, besides conducting us, conducts such orchestras as SSO, TSO, QSO, SOHO and INXS.

The orchestra rehearses:

  • on Tuesdays during session, in the Clancy Auditorium (grid reference D24 on campus map). Arrive by 6:15 pm, down beat at 6:30.
  • until 9 pm (occasionally 9:30) (car pooling is practised). A social session sometimes follows rehearsal in a nearby pub or restaurant.
